FAQ

What is included in the LabSand box?2017-11-10T16:39:22+05:30

Each LabSand box contains 3 bags of hydrophobic sand (300g each) and 3 sets of collection tools (pipettes and vials)

How much LabSand sand do I need to use to collect a urine sample?2017-11-10T16:39:30+05:30

Depending on the size of the cage or other surface of collection, you should use one or more of the three bags included inside the kit. A relatively thin layer of sand will suffice in obtaining a sample.

What happens if the species steps in the sand?2017-11-10T16:39:44+05:30

Depending on the size of the urine sample, it should not be absorbed into the feet or hair of the animal being tested.

What happens if a droplet moves to the side of the sand?2017-11-10T16:39:54+05:30

If the surface is clean, a sample can still be collected.

How long will the urine stay on top of the LabSand sand?2017-11-10T10:52:04+05:30

The urine will stay on top until it all evaporates. We recommend collecting the urine sample as quickly as possible since some test results will differ if not collected immediately. For example, over time the water evaporating from the urine will cause PH levels to change.

Can LabSand sand be reused?2017-11-10T16:40:10+05:30

LabSand is a single-use easily disposable diagnostic kit, and should be disposed of after a single urine sample has been collected. However, if you need to test glucose levels over a period of up to 48 hours, you can use a paper towel to absorb the urine from the surface of the sand, so that the same species can urinate again on the sand. However, if there is any solid waste on the sand, it cannot be reused, as the sand will be contaminated for further use. Please keep in mind that LabSand is not an expensive diagnostic tool, and it really should only be used for a single urine test.

Can you autoclave LabSand sand for sterilization and reuse?2017-11-10T16:40:19+05:30

No, the sand will be damaged in the autoclaving process and will lose its hydrophobic properties.

Is LabSand sterilized?2017-11-10T16:40:30+05:30

LabSand is made from highly treated quarry sand which goes through an extensive process of sterilization and hydrophobic coating during the manufacturing process. Once this happens, no biological life forms or bacteria can develop on the surface of the patented sand.

Does LabSand hydrophobic sand change any of the urine’s properties?2017-11-10T16:41:04+05:30

No, LabSand does not change any of the properties of the urine sample collected. Extensive studies have been conducted and there is no chemical reaction between the hydrophobic sand and any of the urine that beads up on top of it. In addition, several well-known veterinarians and research facilities have conducted their own studies and have submitted multiple samples to commercial laboratories. All urinalysis results were identical between their invasive collection methods and LabSand. Click here to view a validation study that provides detailed urinalysis information and photos.

Is LabSand environmentally friendly?2017-11-10T16:37:47+05:30

Yes, LabSand is made of natural ingredients, which are environmentally friendly and biodegradable.

There is a fine dust covering the urine sample. Does it change the urine’s properties?2017-11-10T16:37:57+05:30

No, the dust is from the hydrophobic sand and will not change the urine sample properties in any way. Click here to view a validation study that demonstrates that LabSand provides a clean uncontaminated urine sample, and that the presence of any hydrophobic dust does not affect the urine sample in any way whatsoever. Moreover, LabSand dust particles do not resemble other parameters which may be tested, and as such will not lead to an incorrect diagnosis.

What happens if an animal eats some of the sand?2017-11-10T16:38:06+05:30

LabSand is non-toxic and safe. No harm will come to the subject from digesting the sand, and if any digestion occurs, it is not significant amounts to create any negative effect.

Is LabSand ethical?2017-11-10T16:38:14+05:30

Yes, LabSand is extremely ethical like all of Coastline Global’s products. Because it is noninvasive, this product maintains the highest possibly standards of animal welfare.

What is the difference between LabSand and invasive methods?2017-11-10T16:38:22+05:30

LabSand is a non-invasive method, which will cause less trauma and stress when trying to obtain a urine sample. Sometimes, when using an invasive method, you will see blood in the urine. This is due to the needle puncturing the urinary bladder wall. By using LabSand, you will always know that any appearance of blood in the urine was caused by the animals testing results and not due to any human error.

What type of validation testing has been done on LabSand?2017-11-10T16:38:29+05:30

LabSand was tested by GlaxoSmithKline over an 8 month study which concluded it is suitable for use in collecting urine samples from animals in laboratory and research environments. Additionally, the hydrophobic sand has been approved by thousands of veterinarians and technicians around the world and has gone through extensive research and testing at major universities. Many industry leaders in the veterinary community have recommended LabSand and our other product Kit4Cat during their speaking engagements at major conferences. There are also several Veterinary Universities currently using Coastline Global’s products in their research programs. Click here to view a validation study that demonstrates that these products provide a clean uncontaminated urine sample.

Can an open bag of unused LabSand sand be saved for later use?2017-11-10T16:38:36+05:30

LabSand sand is sterile, but once the bag is opened, and LabSand is exposed to air, it has a shelf-life of 72 hours.
